Day of Mehndi

By: Uadaya Sivakumar

Emerge Lanka Financial Officer

This picture is most important part of a special memory, my sister’s mehndi ceremony during her wedding. Mehndi is a significant part of Hindu weddings. It is believed that without Mehndi, Hindu wedding ceremonies are incomplete; it is an auspicious occasion and will be usually held a day before the wedding.

It is a function that is celebrated by youngsters in a much enjoyable way; on the day of the Mehndi, we decorated our home with coloured lights and fresh flowers. Since the function happened in the late evening, coloured lights brought a beautiful effect to our living room that, in itself, made our function more pleasant.

Many of my sister’s friends came to the function and, while enjoying sweets and other short eats, they sang songs and danced. We hired professionals to apply Mehndi for us. Many of us applied it only to our hands; a few had it applied to their hands and feet.

My sister’s wedding was a mixture of exciting, felicitous, and somber feelings. Whenever I look at this picture, the whole occasion relives in my mind.
